Melon Dessert

This Melon Dessert is a watermelon shaped into a basket with a knife and filled with fruits.

Ingredients for Melon Dessert:

  • 1 watermelon (for the basket)
  • ½ honeydew melon
  • ½ cantaloupe
  • 1 papaya
  • 2 mangoes
  • ½ cup of blueberries (for decoration)

Preparation:

As the melon basket is meant to be a centerpiece decoration, as well as a unique serving dish, you have three options.

1. After cutting the watermelon into a basket, you can simply cut the fruit you carved out and conveniently place it back into the basket in nice bite-sized pieces.

2. You can use only some of the watermelon and mix it with the honeydew melon, cantaloupe, papaya, and mangoes—and fill your basket.

3. Use only the watermelon rind to contain the melon fruit basket recipe and save the watermelon fruit flesh for another great recipe: my Melon Salad.

In this instance, I chose to go with option 3. So let’s get started!

Preparation:

To make your melon it a basket with a handle, start by cutting into the melon, about 1 inch to the right of the center of the fruit, and slice until you are about half way through the melon. Turn the moon on the side (turn about 90 degrees) and cut vertically into the fruit until you reach your first cut. Remove this piece of melon. Now cut out a similar piece on the other side of the melon, starting about 1 inch left of the center. Your handle will now be about 2 inches wide.

Remove the second piece of fruit. (You may want to cut a little at a time from each side, so that the handle does not break). After removing the pieces/sections of fruit, start carving out the melon either with a grapefruit spoon or a grapefruit knife. The handle will be the last part to be carved out.

Cut the mangos, papaya, honey melon, and cantaloupe in small cubes. Mix them carefully and fill your basket with this delicious combination of fresh fruit. Wash the blueberries and spread them on top.
